The Wedding Planning Decisions You’ll Be Glad You Made Before the Holidays

The holidays have a way of making the last few months of the year disappear.

One minute it’s October.

Then somehow you’re buying Thanksgiving groceries.

Then there are Christmas parties, family gatherings, travel plans, school events, shopping, decorating, and approximately 400 other things happening at once.

And somewhere in the middle of all of that sits your wedding planning checklist.

Waiting.

If you’re planning a 2027 wedding, I’m not going to tell you that you need to have your entire wedding planned before Thanksgiving.

You don’t.

But there are a handful of decisions that can make your life significantly easier if you make them before the holidays arrive in full force.

Not because you need another deadline.

Because January feels a whole lot better when you already know where you’re going.

First: Get Clear on Your Wedding Budget

This probably isn’t the most exciting place to begin.

It’s also one of the most important.

Before you start signing contracts, you need to understand approximately what you’re comfortable investing in the wedding.

And if parents or other family members are contributing financially, now is the time to have those conversations.

You need to know:

  • your overall comfortable budget range
  • who’s contributing
  • approximately how much they’re contributing
  • whether any contribution comes with expectations
  • which areas matter most to you

You don’t need to know exactly how much you’ll spend on napkins.

But you do need a framework.

Because without one, it’s incredibly easy to book several things you love individually and realize later that they don’t work together financially.

A budget isn’t there to limit your wedding.

It’s there to help you decide where your money matters most.

Make the Actual Guest List

Not:

“Probably around 150.”

I want names.

You don’t need addresses yet.

You don’t need to know everyone’s plus-one.

But sit down with your partner—and whoever else is involved in the guest list—and start putting actual people on paper.

Because “around 150” has a funny way of becoming 213.

Your guest count influences:

  • venue selection
  • catering
  • bar
  • rentals
  • stationery
  • transportation
  • staffing
  • floor plans
  • overall budget

It’s one of the foundational numbers we use throughout the entire planning process.

And getting everyone together over the holidays tends to inspire family members to suddenly remember 27 additional people they absolutely must invite.

Better to have those conversations early.

Decide What Your Wedding Actually Needs to Feel Like

2027 Wedding Planning

Before you decide on colors, flowers, or invitations, talk about the experience.

Ask each other:

How do we want this wedding to feel?

Maybe you want it to feel like an incredible dinner party.

Maybe you want a huge celebration where everyone is on the dance floor.

Maybe hospitality is the priority.

Maybe you want something intimate and incredibly intentional.

Maybe you want your guests to arrive Friday and stay through Sunday.

Maybe you want a destination celebration where everyone essentially takes a vacation together.

These conversations matter because your wedding vision should influence your decisions—not the other way around.

Identify Your Top Three Priorities

Here’s one of my favorite planning exercises:

Separately, write down the three things that matter most to each of you.

Then compare.

You might discover you’re completely aligned.

Or you might learn that you’ve been obsessing over florals while your fiancé is thinking:

“I genuinely just want the best band possible.”

Neither person is wrong.

This is exactly the conversation you want to have.

Because your priorities tell us where you may want to invest more—and where you may be perfectly happy keeping things simple.

When a decision comes up later, you can ask:

Does this support one of our priorities?

Suddenly, saying yes or no becomes much easier.

Secure Your Venue—or Narrow the Search

If you don’t have a venue yet, I’d make this a major pre-holiday priority.

Your venue determines so much:

Your date.

Your location.

Your capacity.

Your catering options.

Your rental needs.

Your weather contingency.

And sometimes even the type of wedding you can realistically create.

If you’re not ready to sign yet, that’s okay.

At minimum, narrow your options and begin touring.

You want to enter the new year knowing what you’re looking for—not beginning from scratch.

If You Want Full Planning, Talk to Your Planner Now

This is one I feel particularly strongly about.

If you’re considering full-service wedding planning, don’t wait until you’ve planned half the wedding before hiring the person you’re expecting to help you plan it.

The earlier your planner comes into the process, the more useful we can actually be.

We can help you evaluate:

  • venue options
  • budget allocation
  • vendor proposals
  • contracts
  • logistics
  • design decisions
  • guest experience
  • planning priorities

Instead of saying:

“Okay, here’s everything we’ve already booked. Now help us make it work.”

We can help you build it intentionally from the beginning.

That’s an entirely different service—and an entirely different experience for you.

Start Conversations With Your Highest-Priority Vendors

You don’t need every vendor booked before Christmas.

But if there are professionals whose work you specifically love, find out whether they’re available.

This might include your:

  • photographer
  • videographer
  • entertainment
  • caterer
  • florist
  • hair and makeup team
  • specialty vendors

Especially if your date is fixed.

An inquiry gives you information.

Maybe they’re available.

Maybe they’re not.

Maybe their investment is exactly what you anticipated.

Maybe it’s significantly different.

Either way, now you have actual information instead of assumptions.

Read the Contracts Before You Sign Them

Holiday brain is real.

Do not let holiday brain sign a $6,000 contract at 11:47 p.m. because you’re trying to cross something off the list.

Slow down.

Read it.

Understand:

  • payment schedules
  • cancellation terms
  • rescheduling policies
  • travel costs
  • overtime
  • what’s included
  • what isn’t included
  • who is actually providing the service
  • what happens in an emergency

And ask questions.

A professional vendor should be able to explain their agreement and expectations clearly.

Signing quickly isn’t nearly as important as signing confidently.

Talk About the Wedding Weekend, Not Just the Wedding Day

This is particularly important if you have a lot of guests traveling.

Will you have a welcome party?

A rehearsal dinner?

A bridal brunch?

A farewell brunch?

Transportation?

Room blocks?

Guest activities?

You don’t necessarily need to plan each event right now.

But you should decide whether those events are likely to exist.

Because a wedding weekend has different logistical needs than a single wedding day.

It may also influence your planning service, venue choices, accommodations, transportation, stationery, and budget.

Think about the whole experience early.

Get Your Hotel and Travel Logistics Moving

If you’re expecting a significant number of out-of-town guests, accommodations deserve attention sooner than you may think.

This is especially true if your wedding overlaps with:

  • major local events
  • college football weekends
  • festivals
  • holidays
  • conventions
  • other high-demand travel periods

You don’t want to discover later that the hotel closest to your venue is already sold out or significantly more expensive than expected.

For destination weddings, this conversation becomes even more important.

Travel isn’t something I’d leave until the last minute.

Decide What Can Wait Until January

Yes.

I’m literally telling you to stop planning some things.

Once your foundational decisions are made, give yourself permission to leave the smaller things alone.

You probably do not need to decide your napkin fold before Christmas.

You don’t need favors.

You don’t need to choose your cake topper.

You don’t need to know your signature cocktail.

You don’t need to have your entire ceremony written.

Not everything deserves your attention at the same time.

Good planning is just as much about knowing what not to work on yet.

Why Doing This Before the Holidays Makes January So Much Easier

Imagine two versions of January.

In the first:

You still don’t know your budget.

Your parents haven’t agreed on the guest list.

You haven’t chosen a venue.

You’re reaching out to vendors without knowing whether they’re within budget.

And you’re trying to figure everything out while engagement season is bringing more couples into the market.

Now imagine the second:

Your budget is established.

You know your approximate guest count.

Your venue is secured.

Your planner is on your team.

Your highest-priority vendors are booked or being interviewed.

And you know exactly what decisions are coming next.

Same wedding.

Completely different planning experience.

That’s why I’m such a believer in doing the foundational work early.

You Don’t Need to Finish Planning. You Need a Plan.

That’s the entire point.

You don’t need to spend the holidays glued to a wedding spreadsheet.

Please don’t.

Go eat the pie.

Decorate the tree.

Travel.

Spend time with your family.

Enjoy being engaged.

The goal isn’t to finish your wedding before the holidays.

It’s to make enough of the right decisions that wedding planning isn’t hanging over your head throughout them.

Get the foundation in place.

Then let yourself enjoy the season.

Want to Enter the New Year With an Actual Wedding Plan?

At Bella Poggio Events, I believe wedding planning should have structure—but it shouldn’t consume your life.

You don’t need to make every decision today.

You need to know which decisions matter today.

That’s where having an experienced planner changes the process.

We’ll establish your priorities, build a realistic planning strategy, assemble the right vendor team, and keep everything moving at the right time—without making your engagement feel like one enormous to-do list.

If you’re planning a 2027 wedding and want to enter the holidays knowing the important pieces are already moving, I’d love to start the conversation. 💛
