Here’s the wedding planning timeline I wish every newly engaged couple had.
Before You Book Anything: Dream Together
Before reaching out to venues or vendors, spend time talking with your fiancé about what matters most.
Ask yourselves:
- What do we want our wedding to feel like?
- What three things matter most to us?
- What kind of experience do we want our guests to have?
These conversations become the foundation for every decision that follows.
12–18 Months Before: Secure the Foundation
These are the biggest decisions you’ll make:
✔ Establish your budget
✔ Create an estimated guest count
✔ Choose your wedding date
✔ Book your venue
Why?
Because almost every other vendor depends on these details.
Once your venue and date are secured, the rest of your planning begins to fall into place.
10–12 Months Before: Book Your Priority Vendors
These vendors often book the earliest:
- Wedding planner
- Photographer
- Videographer
- Entertainment
- Caterer (if needed)
One of the biggest mistakes I see is couples waiting because they think they have plenty of time.
Unfortunately, your favorite vendors may already be booked long before your wedding is just a few months away.
8–10 Months Before: Start Designing Your Wedding
Now the fun begins.
Think about:
- Color palette
- Overall style
- Floral vision
- Rentals
- Stationery
This is also a great time to finalize your wedding party attire.
6–8 Months Before: Fine Tune the Details
Focus on:
- Menu tastings
- Cake selection
- Transportation
- Hotel blocks
- Ceremony details
This stage is where your vision begins turning into actual plans.
3–4 Months Before: Confirm the Big Picture
This is where many couples begin feeling overwhelmed.
You’re managing RSVPs, confirming vendors, creating seating charts, and finalizing countless small details.
This is also when your wedding coordinator becomes incredibly valuable.
Rather than juggling emails, contracts, and logistics yourself, someone else begins organizing the moving pieces so you can actually enjoy the final months before your wedding.
1–2 Months Before: It’s All About Logistics
During this stage:
- Final timeline is created
- Vendors receive confirmations
- Final guest count is submitted
- Seating chart is completed
- Rehearsal is organized
By this point, planning shifts from dreaming to execution.
The Week of Your Wedding
Ideally…
You shouldn’t be answering vendor questions.
You shouldn’t be coordinating deliveries.
You shouldn’t be solving problems.
You should be spending time with family and friends while your planning team handles the logistics.
The Biggest Mistakes Couples Make
One of the most common planning mistakes isn’t choosing the wrong flowers or forgetting favors.
